Anatomy of a Successful Breastfeeding Consult—A Case Studies Course

Too often when parents seek support for breastfeeding problems, they receive cookie-cutter information on how to manage the issues, and the breastfeeding problems continue or worsen as a result. That’s an understandable outcome when a friend in a mom’s group has offered advice, but it’s not an acceptable outcome when a mom has sought assistance from a breastfeeding professional. IBCLCs and those who are aspiring to be IBCLCs must learn to do better.

In this intimate course (limited to six participants), students will learn to evaluate lactation difficulties using an eight-step system of analysis. We will then apply the eight steps to a series of case studies that will come from my six-year lactation practice history (with families’ identifying details changed, naturally) to create an accurate understanding of the underlying issues and formulate a care plan that addresses these issues. The work will generally include 2-4 hours of homework between each month’s session. There will be a focus on the various topics that IBCLCs tend to see frequently. Students will come away from the course with a deeper understanding of the potential complexity of lactation problems, and with a process for beginning to unravel them so that families they serve are better able to meet their breastfeeding goals. And students will fully understand why good lactation consultants spend 1-2 hours with clients in each appointment.

This course is appropriate for anyone who is interested in developing or deepening a career that includes serving breastfeeding families.

Please note: If you are not an IBCLC, this course will provide you with important clinical learning experience, but the course alone will not be sufficient for you to move outside your current scope of practice.

A minimum of four students must register for the course to occur. There are places for a maximum of six students.
